Summary
- Jacky Vargas
Am I Blue by Bruce Coville is about a guy called Vince, he couldn't decide his sexuality . His fairy godfather went up to him and tells him he has three wishes he could make. At first he didn't believe him being his fairy godfather, so his fairy godfather used one of his wishes and proved to him he was real. They started talking about how Vince wasn't sure if he is gay or not so his godfather told him he would turn everyone that either is gay or has been gay blue. His fairy godfather made everyone turn different shades of blue on peoples skin, some weren't changing but the others were. Later on after seeing what had happened he wished his final two wishes and those were for everyone to be able to see the color they had changed and for the guy that would tease him to turn gay. At the end you find out that Vince is bisexual.

Description of characters and setting:
-Wyatt Connolly
Vince a confused young adult struggling with his sexuality. One trait that he has is that he’s arrogant, and I know because of the context of the story. For example, he says “Don’t call me honey!” I (Vince) snapped! Another characteristic that I found out he is through the context is that he’s confused about himself. The whole story revolves around him being confused about his sexuality so it wasn’t that hard to find out. First of all, unlike the fairy godmother, you wouldn’t know that he’s gay in the beginning. One quote I got from the context was “Me being your first case. Does that mean I’m gay?” and “I didn’t mention that I had been trying to figure out the same thing myself for about a year now.” Now for me, I’m not confused about my sexuality, and I’ll never be because I know myself more than anyone else, but for someone to think about their sexuality for a year now makes me wonder if they actually know who they are.

Analysis of symbolism
Wyatt Connolly
There are many quotes from the story that contain many forms of symbolism. One example is actually from the first sentence in the story, “It started the day Butch Carrigan decided I was interested in jumping his bones.” Now no one was actually going to “jump anyone’s bones”, but metaphorically it meant that Butch wanted to beat Vince up. Another example is when Vince is communicating with the fairy godfather, and suddenly the godmother had “that look in his eye”. This is another example of how symbolism is used in the context since the author is trying to explain how the godfather is acting, but not directly explaining through text.

Analysis of theme
- Denise Quiroz
The main theme in this story is to “be yourself”. I think this is the theme because he thought he would be judged if everyone thought he was gay, fortunately he wasn’t. The fairy godfather supports this theme as one of his characteristics from this quote, “ You may be, you may not. The point is, you’re getting picked on because people think you are (gay)-which is why I’ve been sent to work with you, Gaybashing is a special issue for me.” The main character, Vince, exemplifies this particular theme as well throughout his actions in the short story. One of the many examples includes him being more comfortable around the fairy godfather. At first, Vince despised him even when he just wanted to help. But in the end, Vince opened up and became buddies with him.

Compare/ Contras
Marco Corbera
This story reminds me of a movie called Brokeback Mountain. This movie also contains characters that are homosexuals and explains the hardships of being so. One of the hardships that is similar to both stories is the confusion of ones feelings, which tends to be reoccurring thoughts for the main characters in both the short story and the movie. Throughout the story and movie there is a lot of character development which helps evolves the character into finding more about themselves that they were having trouble trying to do before and of course they had some help doing so with the supporting characters. Overall both of these creations have a very similar outlook upon finding oneself and in the end they both have a more clear look of themselves than before.

recommendation
-Marco Corbera
I recommend this short story because it's very relevant to everyday life. I think it would be a story that a lot of people can enjoy because it's not too serious. This story has a lot of humor in it and is very creative within every page you read. I think it’s message portrays something a lot of readers will find enjoyable. The length of the story was not very long either which makes it a very straight forward story to read and does not feel too lengthy in its entirety. The story only has two main characters, which oddly, is enough. One of the characters helps out the other by providing him with wishes to help learn more about himself and though it may sound like a serious tone, they are rather very sarcastic people with a raunchy sense of humor.
